XRP Swap Fees Explained: Network Fees vs. Provider Spread
"What are the fees?" sounds like a simple question, but a crypto swap actually involves two structurally different costs that are easy to conflate into one number.
Network fee: tiny, and specific to the XRP Ledger
Every transaction on the XRP Ledger pays a small network fee, paid in XRP itself, that goes toward spam prevention rather than to any company. This fee is typically a very small fraction of a single XRP — it's one of the XRP Ledger's well-known design properties, in contrast to networks where transaction ("gas") fees can spike significantly during congestion. This fee applies to the XRP Ledger side of a transaction; the destination network (if you're swapping into an asset on a different chain) has its own separate, unrelated fee structure.
Provider spread: the part that actually matters for your rate
The bigger cost in practice is usually the spread — the difference between the raw market rate (what this site's calculators show) and the rate you're actually offered when you execute a trade. This is how most swap providers, exchanges, and bridge services generate revenue: not usually a separately itemized "fee" line, but built into a slightly less favorable exchange rate than the pure market reference rate.
This means two providers can both claim "no fees" while still offering meaningfully different rates for the same swap — the spread is the real cost, whether or not it's labeled as one. See our direct vs. bridge-computed rates guide for a related reason quoted rates can differ between sources.
What to actually compare
- The quoted rate at execution time, not a headline "0% fees" claim — the rate itself tells you what the spread actually is.
- Whether the fee structure changes with trade size. Some providers widen their spread for larger orders due to liquidity constraints; this isn't necessarily bad practice, but it's worth knowing before a large trade.
- Any withdrawal or network fee on the receiving end, separate from the swap itself — moving the received asset off a platform afterward can carry its own cost.
How this site handles it
Every rate shown on this site's calculators is the raw reference market rate — it does not include our swap partner's own fee or spread, which applies when you actually execute a trade through the Swap button, same as it would on any exchange or bridge provider. We disclose this plainly rather than implying the displayed number is what you'll receive after all costs.
