Ripple's On-Demand Liquidity (ODL): How It Actually Works

On-Demand Liquidity is Ripple's cross-border payments product. It's the clearest real-world application of XRP's bridge-currency design, so understanding it also explains why XRP exists in its current form.

The pre-funding problem

Before a product like ODL, a bank or payment provider that wants to send money to, say, the Philippines needs a pre-funded account in Philippine pesos sitting in a local bank there — a "nostro account." Multiply that across every corridor a payment provider supports, and a meaningful share of the company's capital ends up parked in idle foreign-currency accounts instead of being used for anything productive. That's the cost ODL is designed to remove.

How a transaction flows

  1. The sender's institution converts the source currency into XRP.
  2. That XRP moves across the XRP Ledger to a liquidity provider on the receiving end — typically settling within seconds.
  3. The liquidity provider converts the XRP into the destination currency and pays out to the recipient.

No nostro account is required in the destination currency because the institution never has to pre-position funds there — it sources destination-currency liquidity on demand, at the moment of the transaction, hence the name.

What this actually changes

What ODL doesn't change

ODL doesn't eliminate currency risk or exchange-rate exposure — the sender still bears whatever rate applies at the moment of conversion, same as any other cross-border transfer. It also isn't a consumer-facing product; it's infrastructure that banks and payment companies integrate into their own systems, not something an individual signs up for directly. And its real-world adoption and corridor coverage has grown gradually and unevenly since launch — treat any specific volume or corridor-count claim you see quoted as a snapshot of a particular moment, not a permanent fact.

How this relates to the bridge calculator on this site

Our bridge calculator shows the same underlying math ODL relies on — currency A converted to XRP, then that XRP converted to currency B — using current market rates. It's a demonstration of the mechanism, not a live ODL corridor or a payment service.
